Karoo + water = this! Karoo + water = this! - Photo: Pic by hq.net

Whilst 35000 cyclists struggelled around the Cape Peninsula in a gale force south-easterly, my thoughts went out to them as they tackled several of the passes on this website, including Smitswinkel, Chapmans Peak Drive and the dreaded Suikerbossie. Why is it that a pass with twists and turns is more bearable than one without? Anyone who has ever cycled up Suikerbossie will understand!

We have some great new material for you this week, as usual.

1. We have refurbished the 3 part video series on the Swartberg Pass. This page gets the most hits on our website. We have changed the format from a three page format and edited it to a more manageable single page, plus we have re-narrated all three videos to provide up to date information and additional historical details. We really like the result and feel we have done justice to one of South Africa's most iconic passes. It is also a form of tribute to Thomas Bain.

2. Snyders Poort is a very remote gravel pass "doer in die Karoo". If you like off the beaten track stuff, then this one's for you.

3. Rooipoort Pass is fairly close to Sutherland. Save this one for a mid-winter breakaway of celestial proportions.

4. Rooikloof Pass lies just south of Sutherland and like the Rooipoort Pass (above) they are both named for the red coloured mountains through which they traverse.

That's it from us. Enjoy the cyber driving. There's plenty more on the way with a rash of smaller passes in the Northern Cape scheduled for production this week.

Drive safely!

Master Orientation Map

Master Orientation Map We are as passionate about maps as we are about mountain passes. A good map is a thing of beauty that can transport you into the mists of time or get your sense of adventure churning. It is a place to make discoveries about deserts and seas, mountains and lakes; of roads leading into places you have not been before; a place to pore over holiday destinations or weekend camping trips. A map is your window to the world.
