Africa today - an exciting continent Africa today - an exciting continent - Photo: Trygve Roberts

My jaw dropped when I saw this old Isuzu bakkie (ute) carting an entire car (sans engine) on its load bay, attached with a single webbing strap. The Isuzu's front wheels were barely on the ground and the driver was clearly having some difficulty controlling his steed. Not a traffic officer in sight. The first long weekend is done and dusted. Next is the school holidays. This week we have a very interesting mix of passes for you.

1. Kowyns Pass - A serious tarred pass between Graskop and Bushbuckridge in Mpumalanga. A land of misty mountains and waterfalls. Fabulous.

2. Baviaans-Kouga 4x4 - A big offroad drive in the Eastern Cape of 70 km connecting Kareedouw with the central Baviaanskloof. Not many people have tackled this route. It's a gem.

3. Tyger Valley Road - A 'suburban pass' close to Cape Town with wine estates, olives and MTB tracks being the attraction.

Later this week we will be bringing you another trio of interesting passes as we scour the countryside for new and interesting places to travel. Many thanks to all the people who have "liked" us on Face Book and to the hundreds who have subscribed to our site. Without you, we are nothing!

Cheers for now.

Master Orientation Map

Master Orientation Map We are as passionate about maps as we are about mountain passes. A good map is a thing of beauty that can transport you into the mists of time or get your sense of adventure churning. It is a place to make discoveries about deserts and seas, mountains and lakes; of roads leading into places you have not been before; a place to pore over holiday destinations or weekend camping trips. A map is your window to the world.
