The Khyber Pass in Afghanistan is one of the most notoriously dangerous and difficult high altitude passes in the world. But  did you know that South Africa also has a Khyber Pass? This week we take you to the green rolling forests of KZN well north of Howick into a land of evergreen forests and tumbling waterfalls where the gravel roads can vary from excellent to downright slippery.

Howick is a quiet little village on the Umgeni River just downstream of the Midmar Dam wall - most famous for the annual Midmar Mile -a hugely popular event for long-distance swimmers. The village is also well known for the Howick Falls - a straight drop waterfall which is almost always flowing as the Umgeni convolutes its way through the hills of KZN on its way down to the Blue Lagoon in Durban. We take you a little further up some of the tributaries of the Umgeni and uncover more waterfalls for the nature lovers amongst you.

Some 20 km to the north of Howick, we guide you to the Khyber Pass - a steep gravel pass used mainly by logging trucks and local farmers. This little known pass offers gigantic views over the Karkloof valley - itself a popular destination with the adventure set, where you can enjoy a zip slide, hiking trails, more waterfalls and MTB routes in a pristine, secluded valley full of fresh mountain air. A visit to the Karkloof Nature Reserve is a must. Put it on your bucket list now!
