Phutaditjhaba is a massive sprawling complex of villages just to the north of Lesotho in the southern Free State. We weave you carefully, but accurately through this maze of interconnecting villages from the R712 midway between the Golden Gate Highlands National Park and historic Harrismith, to uncover a gem of a gravel pass that is both challenging in terms of its steepness, but also for its rough surface, both factors which are adequately compensated by extraordinarily magnificent scenery from above the 2000m contour line. It's another one of those 'Roads less Travelled'

Our Gauteng based film crew managed to film this pass from motorcycles in both the ascending and descending mode, which gives an excellent impression of how rough and stony the road is, as well as showing glimpses of the spectacular high altitude Free State scenery.

Despite a small hatchback type vehicle appearing on the video footage near the summit, we do not recommend this pass for normal vehicles. It is best driven in a 4WD vehicle or at least a commercial vehicle (bakkie) with good ground clearance.

In winter this pass is sometimes closed due to snowfalls. The pass ends at the South African / Lesotho border control point. For those proceeding onwards into Lesotho it provides a fabulous entree to the vast conglomeration of mountain passes awaiting the avid adventure traveller in the Mountain Kingdom.
